Yodel uses AI technology to analyze websites and aggregate events based on the source structure. Utilizing many of the same technologies and structure recognition as popular search engines, Yodel is able to capture most events without manual data entry. By focusing on event data only, Yodel recognizes and aggregates many events that most other platforms can't. However, there are still rare occasions when the event structure is unrecognizable by even Yodel's technology.
Proper structuring of event data on your website will not only make it possible to automatically get your events on the Yodel platform, it may also help get your events recognized by the major search engines. This will increase event promotion, improve SEO on your site, and make your events easier to find by your target audience.
Bottom line... If Yodel doesn't recognize it as an event, neither does Google, Bing, Yahoo, or any other search engine.
Below are some helpful tips and general rules for displaying events on any website
Event Structure
Some general rules for entering event information:
- Include a full date and time for your event.
- Many sites will exclude the year when displaying events on the site. This can potentially cause the event to get skipped by aggregators, as they can't tell when the event actually is. [Ex. Saturday, June 14, 2025 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM]
- Include a full location. Ex. 1234 W Main St, Newark, OH 43055, USA
- Entering only a place name, room number, or town is a common mistake. Most aggregators utilize automation to assign exact locations. Without declaring the exact location in the event, you are relying solely on the automation to decide an exact location for you.
- Ensure each event on your website has the same structure
- Event aggregators will typically evaluate the page for one event structure and that will be the structure used for all future events. If an event deviates from that structure, the aggregator may skip the event entirely.
- Each piece of metadata should be its own container
- Make sure that you separate and properly label each data point that is important to the event [EX. Title field, date/time field, location field, description field, etc. etc.]
HTML Structure
For search engines or Yodel to recognize your events, they need to be organized cleanly in the HTML code with identifiers.
Well-structured event html code:
- Every event is structured the same way
- There is a specific class for each piece of data.
